In Japan, the dragonfly is a symbol of strength, courage and happiness. In other parts of the world they are held in less high esteem. Nonetheless, dragonflies are harmless to humans, and a beneficial insect predator – they are especially good at keeping mosquito populations under control. Over 5000 dragonfly species have been identified around the world.
