The heat is on
As of 1PM the local temperature is 95°F. The good news is, the heat wave should break this evening. The bad news is that the cold front scheduled to arrive may trigger severe weather in the area. Once again, the atmosphere is charged and ready to explode. This has certainly been quite an active summer, weather-wise.
The recent heat has brought with it an abundance of “hot weather clouds.” This is something I remember quite distinctly from my youth; clouds billowing up on the horizon in the mid-afternoon heat, often reaching incredible heights, usually resulting in strong gusty storms and heavy downpours. It seems to me that this type of pattern has been somewhat absent in recent years, but it’s made a comeback in the summer of 2013. Though I am fully aware of the terrible impact storms can have on people’s lives, I must sheepishly confess feeling a certain thrill watching these types of storms develop. The elemental nature, the raw power on display – it’s something to behold.
