Quite a mess here in Illinois yesterday, after one of the most powerful Great Lakes storms of the past half-century. There were 81 reports of tornadoes, including what appears to have been an EF4 tornado in central Illinois. There were also many, many other reports of high straight line winds – as high as 86mph – heavy rains, and hail up to four inches in diameter. In it’s history, the Chicago National Weather Service has issued 194 tornado warnings – 101 of them were issued this weekend, hammering home the unusual nature of this monster storm. My specific area was fortunate – the rains were heavy and the winds strong, but we were spared from the absolute worst of the winds and tornadoes. My condolences to those who lost friends or loved ones, and to those whose homes were destroyed.
