I always look forward to the lilacs. Not sure why… I think it may have to do with their iconic status as garden plants. Lilacs as garden plants date back to at least the 16th century, possibly far earlier. Lilacs have also been mentioned in literature and poetry, such as Walt Whitman’s “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.” They even play a role in Greek mythology. Mostly, I think I look forward to the lilacs because they represent spring, a new beginning. Who couldn’t use one of those, every once in awhile?
